Something I am often asked is ‘can Hypnotherapy help with depression?'.  Firstly I think it helps to define ‘depression’.  Whilst a Psychiatrist would have a tick list of criteria you would have to meet to be diagnosed as having depression, most people would define depression as

  1. Low mood
  2. Apathy
  3. Despondency
  4. Feelings of helplessness and negativity
  5. Unwillingness to interact with the world, possibly even an inability to leave the house or go to work or school

A lot of these definitions would overlap with what I would call anxiety. But whatever you call those feelings of negativity, despondency, fear or anxiety, the good news is that Hypnotherapy can be a really powerful help with all these negative feelings. Here’s how -

  1. Hypnotherapy helps people overcome depression by getting them back in touch with positive emotions such as confidence and empowerment and optimism.  These emotions can be used to push out and replace the feelings of depression.
  2. Once you are feeling more positive, calmer and clearer in your mind, it is so much easier to see the light at the end of the tunnel.  It is easier to imagine all the good things that await you and start working towards them.
  3. Sometimes people’s feelings of depression can be the direct result of a traumatic experience of some kind and Hypnotherapy can take the power out of unhappy or traumatic experiences that might be haunting you.

So yes, Hypnotherapy can be a powerful tool in combatting depression, anxiety and negative thoughts and feelings of all kinds through strengthening the sense of self and re-igniting a spark of optimism helping you to move ahead with hope, positivity and confidence
